2

Connect Your Trezor

Use the provided USB cable to connect your Trezor device to your computer. Once connected, Trezor Suite will automatically detect your device. If this is a new device, you'll be prompted to install the latest firmware.

The firmware installation ensures your device has the latest security features and bug fixes. This process takes a few minutes and requires your device to restart.

3

Create a New Wallet

Choose "Create new wallet" when prompted. Your Trezor will generate a unique recovery seed phrase consisting of 12 or 24 words. This seed phrase is the master key to your cryptocurrency and must be kept absolutely secure.

Critical Security Step: Write down your recovery seed on the provided cards. Never take photos or store it digitally. Anyone with access to this seed can access your funds.

4

Backup Your Recovery Seed

Using the recovery seed cards included with your Trezor, carefully write down each word in the exact order shown on your device screen. Double-check each word for accuracy. Store these cards in a secure location, preferably in a fireproof safe or safety deposit box.

Consider making multiple copies and storing them in different secure locations. Never share your recovery seed with anyone, including Trezor support staff.

5

Verify Your Backup

Trezor Suite will ask you to confirm your recovery seed by selecting specific words from your backup. This verification step ensures you've correctly recorded your seed phrase. If you make a mistake, you'll need to start the backup process again.

6

Set a PIN

Create a strong PIN code to protect your device from unauthorized physical access. Your PIN should be at least 4 digits, but longer PINs provide better security. The PIN is entered using a randomized keypad displayed on your computer screen, ensuring keyloggers cannot capture it.

7

Start Using Your Trezor

Congratulations! Your Trezor is now set up and ready to use. You can now receive cryptocurrency to your wallet addresses, send funds, and manage your portfolio securely through Trezor Suite.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hardware wallet?

A hardware wallet is a physical device designed to securely store cryptocurrency private keys offline. Unlike software wallets that store keys on internet-connected devices, hardware wallets keep your keys isolated from potential online threats, providing the highest level of security for your digital assets.

Is Trezor compatible with my cryptocurrency?

Trezor supports over 1,000 cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and thousands of ERC-20 tokens. New coins and tokens are regularly added through firmware updates. You can check the complete list of supported cryptocurrencies on the official Trezor website.

What happens if I lose my Trezor device?

If your Trezor is lost or damaged, your funds remain safe as long as you have your recovery seed phrase. You can purchase a new Trezor device (or use any compatible BIP39 wallet) and restore access to your cryptocurrency using the recovery seed. This is why securely storing your seed phrase is crucial.

Can someone steal my crypto if they steal my Trezor?

Your Trezor is protected by a PIN code. After multiple incorrect PIN attempts, the device wipes itself. Additionally, advanced users can set up a passphrase for an extra layer of security. Without your PIN and/or passphrase, a thief cannot access your funds even with physical possession of the device.

How do I update my Trezor firmware?

Trezor Suite automatically notifies you when firmware updates are available. The update process is simple and secure, taking only a few minutes. Always ensure your recovery seed is safely backed up before performing any firmware updates. Never skip security updates as they contain important improvements and fixes.

Do I need to keep Trezor Suite open to receive cryptocurrency?

No, you don't need Trezor Suite running to receive cryptocurrency. Your wallet addresses are always active on the blockchain. You only need to open Trezor Suite when you want to check your balance, send transactions, or manage your portfolio. Incoming transactions will appear once you connect your device.
